Since graduating from the BFA program at the art Academy of Cincinnati in 2007, local artist Ruth Wartman has continued to make art prolifically. Her paintings and drawings are spellbinding and carry a sort of lovely sadness within them.
The new group of paintings and drawings she will be presenting in 1305 have been long-awaited. I first approached Ruth when she was still in school about having a show here, and it's finally come to pass.

Join us this and every Final Friday for food, drinks, artwork, a chat with the artist, and to enjoy our street and neighborhood.

Opening this Friday, September 30th with a reception that evening from 6-11 pm is Little Conversations, new work by Geri Shields.

Shields' work includes whimsical paintings that reflect both her training as an illustrator and a playful interest in childlike characters in coy and somewhat awkward situations. The work is a light-hearted narrative done with a fast and precise hand; rendering soft faces and little conversations.

Exhibition continues through October 22nd, wiith regular gallery hours Thursday-Sunday: 12-4, or by appointment.

Images & Objects: new work by Mike Jacobs

The exhibition runs through September 23rd with regular gallery hours Thurs-Sun 12-4 & by Appointment.

I first saw Mike Jacobs work at a gallery in Main Strasse about 6 years ago. The exhibition was comprised of multiple large, geometric, framed panels. The imagery within was flat but bold- reinvented pop iconography layered into brightly colored geometric landcapes. These landscapes themselves were encapsulated within a frame that carefully edged out the irregular shape of Jacob's panels. I was immediately jealous that he wasn't showing in my space, but also desperately wishing I had the money at the time to buy one. Since then I have loved seeing his work evolve and was so very pleased to put him on my 2011 Calendar @ 1305!

Mike Jacob's new work is recognizably of his repetoir, but shows a new method for defining the space in his 2-D pieces. The artist is using line, perspective, and color in a very strict and fundamental way to structure the surfaces. The exhibition also includes new toy sculptures by the artist which reference the characters often used in his paintings.

Future Tense by Jeff Casto

Opening Final Friday, May 27th from 6-11 pm is future tense new mixed media, sculpture, and assemblage by local artist Jeff Casto.
The exhibition will run through July 15th, with gallery hours Thursday thru Sunday: 12-4.

Jeff Casto may be a familiar name to many of you, he has been a prolific visionary in the Cincinnati art scene for many years now. His work shows constant progress with a unique sense of itself. While enjoying Casto's work over time, one may feel as though they were sifting through a personal collection of objects, elements, and sentiments- uniquely catalogued and immortalized by the artist.

I found myself wondering as I marveled at Casto's works in his studio, "where did you get all this stuff." A question that apparently I wasn't the first to ask based on the artist's response. He somewhat shyly but clearly hinted that some of the items that end up juxtaposed in his works are indeed found objects, personally collected from here or there, shops or gutters. What was truly charming in his answer was that many things were given to him by friends and acquaintances who knew his work, or simply knew of his passion for unique, adaptable trinkets. Old lockets with forgotten photos, plastic figures of every denomination, yard ornaments, jar lids, and mysterious pieces to the workings of expired machines are but a few of the inanimate populi in Casto's painted and sculpted pieces.

Jeff Casto's work is far more than a collection of misplaced objects and forms. It is methodical, melodramatic, and consists of a quiet yet lurking genius in its completion. The body of work presented for this exhibition at 1305 breeds fears of the revelation, the rapture, with our skewed imaginings of our future world. There is a din painted over the glossy mechanized universe we imagined in our youth, and the opportunities and objects we once believed the future would hold turn out to be nothing more than bits of plastic, metal, and space dust. Our world as when it used to be spoken of in future tense.

Jerzy Barankiewicz

Jerzy Barankiewicz is a San Diego via Poland transplant to Cincinnati, having moved to the Queen City 7 years ago to work as the Director of Clinical Research at the Molecular Research Center Inc., of Cincinnati.

Although he started making ceramic work 40 years ago in Poland, his career as a scientist put a halt to his artistic ventures. It was after moving here to our city that Dr. Barankiewicz started working in clay again.

His work is greatly influenced both by his own collection of clay sculpture and native crafts from around the world, and by what seems to be a natural interest in folk art. Much of his work reflects an interest in folk art made in the midwest in the 19th and 20th centuries by European immigrants and their descendants. In other bodies of Jerzy's work his interest in Native American pottery and symbolism is readily at hand.

Somehow despite what would seem to be an intensely busy and focused career, Jerzy, or Jurek as he is often called, finds time to be a prolific and visionary clay artist. He is a joy to be around, both charismatic and accented, and my only complaint would be that he has simply too much good work to choose from! It is a real pleasure to have Jerzy Barankiewicz and his amazing clay work in the gallery for the 6th anniversary of openings at 1305 Gallery.

Zep Up with Michael Stillion!

Opening Final Friday October 29th, a reception with the artist 6-11 pm is: Zep Up: New Work by Michael Stillion.

In Zep Up Michael Stillion brings a new show of evolution, deconstruction, crude love, and creation to the fall season at 1305. This time 3 years ago Michael was installing his first show at the gallery: Man-Made. We begged him to come back after his recent residency in the Southwest and regional exhibitions! Stillions new work is delightfully disconcerting, fixed and wavering, lovely but disturbing, and all things that 1305 Gallery looks for in an artist's work.

Within his paintings and paper collages there is an immediate sense that objects hold no fixed place, that they are in a constant state of coming together and falling apart. Beyond that the subjects go straight from birth-to adulthood- to decomposition- and even to taxidermy, sometimes all in one piece. It's a surreality that Stillion's delightful application of paint permits the viewer to enter at will.

There is a balance in the paintings between his loose, free, and expressive use of the media and the tighly rendered and controlled objects that struggle to make up some undefinable yet wholly present construct. They are playful and inviting, while encasing an ever present sense of gravity, humanity, animal scent, and magic. Many of these elements are new to Michael's paintings since his last show here, demonstrating how prolific painting and experience have molded his work since 2007.

Stillion's work transports you to an invented but remembered place, something both otherworldly and extremely familiar. You want to touch them but you're also afraid you might get too close. Come see.

Opening Final Friday, September 24th with an reception from 6-11 pm is: twenty three, painting, photography and installation by Chad Sines.

Calling Cincinnati home now, and formerly from Newark, Ohio, Sines reflects upon our city's struggle to understand itself through different media in the first show of our fall/winter season @ 1305.

Twenty three is an exhibition about identity in an urban community. Diaspora in inner cities and culture clashes is not only felt but seen. Portraits of our city are drawn out line by line over time on the sides of buildings, strung across busy streets, and echo within the hallowed halls of vacant buildings.

The lack of understanding between people in the same block, same street, and same culture creates feelings of adversity- adversity perpetuated often by class divisions. The feeling of a need to rescue something that might not need rescuing victimizes the city. Who are the perpetrators then if the city is the victim?

Progress is often defined solely by commercial investment, property value, and demographics. Moving the "problem" out of the city. Displacing people- buildings that housed 50 people housing less than 10. Thinking that a city is something other than a collection of people, that the parts are interchangeable.

Respect for oneself and where one came from must coexist with respect for other individuals in a community. Taking ownership of who you are and where you live while respecting who you share that space with and who occupied it before you is difficult. A city that feels sorry for itself and feels as though it needs redemption is one that is not looking honestly into its past, present, or future. How can art help social change in this way? What does the human condition in our cities look like? How do we make our mark in the world?

If you're a bit lost on the subject you need to come see this show. Chad Sines' exhibition twenty three is one person's attempt to ask these questions in a way that will translate visually.

The artist will also offer prints for sale to benefit at-risk youth in the city of Cincinnati.

Camille Cier Update

On Friday August 6th and on that day only, the French photographer Camille Cier will present her last work on abandoned houses named “ABANDON”.
After her work on the poem of Henri Michaud “Le Grand Combat” which was almost abstract, Camille is coming back to the documentary form to illustrate the empty and abandoned places and the past life that these places are still carrying.
After 3 years in Cincinnati and her work shown in galleries (1305 Gallery and Marx Gallerie) and in shops (MICA, Nvision or Elgin Retro), Camille Cier will leave the city at the end of August for a year travelling around the world. Before leaving, Camille will show her very last work that she did in abandoned houses of the Smoky Mountains.
This will be a one-day show only in an empty place on Vine street (1216 Vine street, next door to the Senate restaurant). It’s Friday from 5 to 10pm.

Paradise: Paintings and Collaborations by Bill Ross

Opening Final Friday, July 30th, is Paradise: Paintings and Collaborations by Bill Ross

Bill Ross is a social-worker and artist who lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1999, while supporting people with developmental disabilities in the area, he began to come across artists with disabilities creating incredible works. Raymond Thunder-Sky was the first artist he worked with, and this initial meeting led to Ross and Keith Banner co-founding Visionaries & Voices, a studio for artists with disabilities, in 2003. In 2009, he and Banner developed Thunder-Sky, Inc., a non-profit arts organization and gallery dedicated to archiving the works and maintaining the legacy of Raymond Thunder-Sky, as well as offering a chance to exhibit to unconventional artists in the area.

Paradise surveys works from the last decade. Ross’s paintings in “Paradise” depict a candy-colored universe that is both seductively sweet and jarringly violent. In each of his works, Ross uses storybook visual cues (cute but demented animals and creatures populating a Day-Glo forest with cupcake-covered hills beneath an orange-pop sky) to undermine the phoniness of fairy-tales, while somehow maintaining the innocence and humor. In 2004, Ross began a series of collaborations with a variety of artists labeled with developmental disabilities (many of whom attend V&V), including Dale Jackson, Becky Iker, Michael Weber, Kevin White and the late Donald Henry. These collaborative works (usually paintings) are about dislocating notions of who is an artist and what art can be and do, and feature Ross’s signature phosphorescent style merged with the signature styles and obsessions of each of the collaborators.

Friendly Fire and Chad Cully

Opening Final Friday, March 26th, is Friendly Fire. This exhibition features new sculptural glass work by local artist and educator Chad Cully.
Friendly Fire continues through May 22nd, with regular gallery hours Tuesday- Saturday: 11-3 for the run of the show. 1305 Gallery will host a catered reception with the artist and his work for the opening, March 26th, from 6-11 pm, and then again on April 30th from 6-11 pm.

Friendly Fire:
Not unlike much of society, Chad Cully has been observing the recent cultural obsession with our impending doom as a civilization. Between fears of global warming, more natural disasters, 2012's hearkening, and the ever lurking alien attack, people have been corralled into a frenzy awaiting 'the end of the world.'

Nestled somewhere between apocalyptic satire and a childlike interpretation of our ultimate demise sits Cully's new body of work. In Friendly Fire the artist furnace works, sculpts, blows, and fuses soda lime glass into aliens, bunnies, rocket ships, a UFO, and even a mutant/robotic penguin and pig. They are characters in a humorous interpretation of our last days on earth.
One beautifully sculpted glass alien is both evil and quirky in his posture, for he seeks to kill the cute vessel-like bunnies who are ultimately representations of the innocent.
Massive glass rocket ships with fused representations of earthly things attached to their hulls are the arks which will carry the bunnies and bits of life and culture off to space to find a new home. One is perched on a welded steel base which helps the piece to so perfectly remind us of the cartoonish representations of rockets from our childhood.
Robotic oracles and a mutant pig and penguin seem to hover on the edge of the sinister, but they must somehow be trusted to free the bunnies from being devoured by the aliens!

Come act out the apocalypse with these beautifully intriguing and insanely well made glass characters and invent your own ending to the story!

"Winged": @ 1305

Opening Final Friday, February 26th is Winged, new work by local artist Kelly Frigard.

The exhibition opens with a catered reception hosted by 1305 Gallery and the Artist on February 26th from 6-11 pm. The show runs through March 21st, with gallery hours Tuesday- Saturday: 11-3, or by appointment.

Winged, Kelly Frigard's second exhibition of new work at 1305 Gallery features pieces showcasing her masterful use of fiber and ceramic media to create delicate and whimsical forms. In her February 2006 exhibition, Wish, Frigard combined hand dyed and felted wool with hand embroidery to create wall-mounted scenes and figures that were both melancholy and warm. The resulting exhibit proved ideal for a winter show.

Now in February of this year, Frigard continues to work in traditional methods of hand felting and hand embroidery, also employing her training in ceramic sculpture and prepared animal skins and furs. These media mix to create soft, fragile, idyllic forms that are at once pulled from nature and taught between our world and that of the natural and unstained. It is a delight to once again showcase her talent in the gallery, bringing a little corner of warmth to our frozen city.

Rich Bitting

The natural soundscape is rich with color and nuance beyond imagination. It is from this sonic metaworld that I draw inspiration for my projects.

The human perception of sound has a relationship with the other senses. As I grew to appreciate this relationship between the senses, I began to realize that my musical scores—the physical scores themselves—could serve not only as performance directions, they could convey meaning as visual art in their own right. Visual art—painting, sculpture, etc.—has its own way of expressing rhythms and harmonies. I have created separate works in both visual and sonic media that are representations of these same, intangible ideas.

As a species, we have evolved to rely primarily on our sense of sight. Our brains have evolved to edit our soundscapes, to filter out “perceived” background “noise” and to process only that sound we deem necessary as information. I invite you to close your eyes, open your mind, and listen to the world through fresh ears.

Opening Final Friday, August 28th is Drawamalgs, new work by David Jarred.

The exhibition continues through September 19th, with an opening reception on Final Friday, August 28th from 6-11 pm.
Drawamalgs showcases the intriguing visual language of local artist David Jarred, who brings his intuitively generated shapes and forms into focus at 1305 Gallery. His subjects are both recognizable and instantly strange, like deja vu or a visit to some lost place from your childhood. Architectural and mechanical forms saturate our daily lives in contemporary society, the digesting of this landscape ever apparent in Jarred's amalgamations or Drawamalgs. The artist's personality and aesthetic are the filter through which the almagamation takes place, therefore allowing these aspects of himself to be reflected in the work.

Systems @ 1305

Opening Final Friday, May 29th with a catered reception that evening from 6-11 pm is Systems, new work by Mindy Kober. The exhibition runs through Saturday, June 20th with normal gallery hours Tuesday through Saturday, 11-3 pm.

Mindy Kober brings a series of gouache paintings on paper to 1305 next month, arriving straight from Houston where she lives and works. With them come a range of themes and influences. They could be described as juxtaposed cartoons, out of context environments, or colorful commentary, and you still would only be skating the surface of the work. These surfaces are brightly colored illustrations on paper, manipulating popular iconic American imagery by forcing it into unfamiliar or ironic settings. Often as a viewer Kober's paintings lure you in as simple, fun, and bright scenes that are easily digested. It takes longer examination to see the motives behind the juxtapositions and relationships in the work, which belie political commentary and themes like catastrophe, war, destructive children, and nationalism.

You can meet the artist for one night only on Final Friday, May 29th from 6-11 pm, when she'll be visiting from her home in Texas. You can see the work anytime through June 20th, so make sure you stop in soon!

Hit List is a look back at some of the most memorable exhibitions in 1305 Gallery's 4 years of operation, celebrating the 4th anniversary of shows on April 24th, 2009. In the spirit of the exhibition Nutshell: a Recent History of 1305 Gallery, the gallery will host work and publicity from 12 shows spanning 2005-2009.

Much of the work comes from the gallery's collection and will be for sale, while some work comes from my personal collection and will be on display to view only. Hit List puts works of different media, makers, and perspectives in one room not to present the work as a group, but as different contributing factions making up the aesthetic of 1305. Guests attending the opening reception will help us celebrate 4 years of shows and counting, looking back at the artists, work, and press that have made the gallery what it is today.

If you can't make it to the opening don't forget that you can stop in on your lunch hour or afternoon out between 11 and 3, Tuesday through Saturday!

chrysalide

Opening Final Friday, March 27th is "Chrysalide," an exhibition of new photographs by Camille Cier. From 6-11 pm that evening the gallery will host the artist and her work with a catered reception.

The exhibition continues through April 18th, with regular gallery hours Tuesday through Saturday from 11-3 pm.

Camille Cier graduated two years ago from "Ecole de Conde" in Lyon, France, although she has been working on the series of photographs featured in this exhibition for four years. Cier started the project as a documentary about her cousin Alma when she was 13 years old. "Qui suis je?" (who am I?) is the question teenagers continually ask themselves on the road to adulthood, and "Chrysalide" is a series that focuses on one girl's tumultuous quest to find an answer.

As the series evolves we see Alma transition from a girl not yet ready to part with her childhood to a young woman with a sense of peace and identity related to her body and her perceptions. The photographs portray Alma as a character in a story we've all played a role in. Her individual struggles and triumphs come across in a third person narrative that lets each viewer see their own face, their own identity, and their own realizations mirrored and transposed. Camille Cier photographed Alma without giving her instructions or directing her actions, they simply "walked in the places we were discovering together, letting her mind go to her girl preoccupation, her world."

Join us Final Friday to explore the work and meet the artist. Everyone will enjoy a night of good company, good food, and great art at 1305 Gallery!

Pick a Pocket

Opening Final Friday, February 27th with a reception that evening from 6-11 pm is Pick a Pocket, an installation of new work by Andrew Neyer.
The exhibition will run through Saturday March 21st with limited hours Saturdays from 12-4, and by appointment.
Neyer has created an engaging exhibit that allows 1305 Gallery's guests to "pick-pocket" through the handmade wallets of invented characters brought to life on the gallery's walls.
The viewer enters into a dense crowd of painted figures, and after finding the one of greatest interest, or taking time to investigate each one, they are able to explore the contents of their wallet. The wallets become biographies of the figures in the installation through the varying contents. The piece provides a unique interaction with otherwise static two dimensional characters.
Each wallet contains cleverly crafted checkbooks, credit cards, money, driver's licenses and so on, inviting you as the viewer/pick-pocket to discover the identity of each character by means of the contents of their pockets. Because the characters are motionless and therefore unable to stop you from picking through their pockets, the daring of this action is balanced by an almost clinical, investigative feeling. For me it brings to mind exploring the pockets of someone who is unconscious and sure not to get up, to find out where they live or who to call. For others it could even border on fulfilling cleptomaniacal fantasies- but you must return the goods!
Please join us this Final Friday to do some pick-pocketing of your own while enjoying the neighborhood happenings and mingling with other artists and art lovers!

Requiem @ 1305

Opening Final Friday, October 31st, with a catered reception that evening from 6-11, is "Requiem," new work by Christopher Hoeting. The exhibition continues through November 22nd, with regular gallery hours from 11-3, Tuesday- Saturday.

Christopher Hoeting is a local artist working out of a studio in Brighton, in the west end of OTR. His recent work focuses on themes of loss, death, emptiness, and removal. His work is brilliantly executed through the use of negative and positive acrylic and resin transfers of imagery related to these themes, which are often very personal.
Through his process we sometimes get a negative, clean-but dissolved image that shows us a distorted scene from the past. Colors and figures are blurred and altered. Images overlap and often disappear on the surface. The positive transfers lay within heavy layers of acrylic and/or resin. The thick, almost skin-like masks that the dried layers leave are then mounted on canvas or panels. Hoeting often allows these think but translucent materials to be mounted in ways that allow light to pass through, revealing the density and complexity of the media and imagery. Some of the work derives directly from the actual pieces of material used, which the artist builds and layers in abstract and, relative to the majority of his work, simple sculptural paintings.
These different applications allow the viewer deeper insight into both Hoeting's process and the content of his work. The result is an entrancing mixture of recollections, dissections, and loose or lost feelings. The work is emotionally and materially captivating, a requiem, a song for something past that is very well tuned for this exhibition.

Yuletide Call for Entries

Hey Everyone!

I am organizing the list of participants for this years Christmas show of "gift art!" The exhibition will open Final Friday November 28th, and run through Christmas Eve day.
The format will be the same as in the past, with hopefully some new participants and lots of people returning to participate again. The show will be installed the week before Final Friday, Sunday-Thursday (December 23rd- 27th).
If you need more detailed information about what's expected in terms of work let me know, if you've participated in the past but want to do something completely different and need to run it by me please email or call too. I'll send a contract to anyone who decides to participate after I've got everyone listed.

Opening Final Friday, September 26th is "Inherent," an exhibition of new work by Lily Mulberry. The exhibition will be in the gallery through October 25th, with a catered reception from 6-11 pm on September 26th. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday- Saturday, 11-3 pm for the run of the show.

My new work has been in process over the last year, one which has included immense changes for my family and I. The work reflects on familial relationships and dynamics. It confronts the challenge of building and maintaining a family, the difficulties of uniting separate and distinct individuals and keeping them together. Sometimes as is life it reflects on letting them go, whether because of death or physical separation. In the same way the work looks into the hopes, mysteries, and expectations that coincide with gaining new family members, whether newly born or through marriage or strong relationships. What things are inherent within the individual because of geneology, and what things can unite you to a family member to which you have no blood ties?

I chose to dedicate a large group of work in the exhibition to working out my ideas on finished wood surfaces. The grain of the wood dictates the composition in many of these pieces, and images move in and out of the grain. The peacefullness and natural pattern of the wood surface allowed me to softly illustrate figures and images derived from my perception of relationships and individuals. Often in the work darker ideas are masked with bright colors and fictional representations of individuals.

Another group of pieces in the show includes nontraditional surfaces as well as wood panels. They are more heavily worked and dense. The ideas and images start to overlap and become thick with meaning, though often without answers. These works in their materials are more reminiscent of my previous work.

We'll be here Final Friday, September 26th with lots of food and drinks, and maybe even some family!

"Rainbow Park" @ 1305

Opening Final Friday, May 30th with a reception that evening from 6-11 pm is "Rainbow Park," an exhibition of paintings from Minneapolis based artist Georgia Mrazkova. Her work will be in the gallery through June 21st, with regular gallery hours Tuesday- Saturday, 11-3.

Georgia's work is filled with fantasy, enchantment, and a sense of the surreal communication that occurs between the world we know and that which we call "nature." Colors and spaces float and stream together, sometimes puddling up and even dripping down the canvas. Within the bright palette of her paintings you find animals and trees, skys and clouds, and imaginary color-filled voids in between. The pieces themselves seem to be alive, the wind is blowing, the figures are turning.

I was attracted to Mrazkova's work instantly. It is both playful and sublime, there is a soft innocence in the characters she portrays that is offset by the distance you as a viewer feel from their worlds. The division that we have created between the world of "man" and that of "nature" starts to get to you when looking at these beautiful, serene, and magical scenes. I thought it would be a great show for the start of summer, the time when we make our own small attempts to unravel the mysteries of nature.

Collision @ 1305!

Opening Final Friday, April 25th is "Collision," an exhibition of new work by Herb Reith. After a reception that evening the show will run through May 24th with regular gallery hours Tuesday through Saturday from 11-3.

Herb and I first met when he was doing work for his MFA at the University of Cincinnati back in 2002. With our studios across the hall from each other it was easy to share dialogue about artwork, weird collection obsessions, kitsch, music, and what contemporary pop junk can lend to a commentary on the way we live today. The work he did and still does outside of installation work consists primarily of cloth/painting collages that hang like works on canvas.

The themes within his work are drawn from landscape and comic-like imagery. The landscapes take shape through camouflage backgrounds, or repetitive forms both isolated and strewn across a piece of cloth. The discussion takes place through painted and collaged forms that occupy these patterned landscapes, working toward what Reith calls "a more abstract investigation of human's impact on the environment." The title "Collision" reminds us of what can be so unnatural about our lives here on this planet colliding with the natural world. There is a playful irony to many of the pieces, and they don't stick out as socially ambiguous. They are textural, rhythmic, and alive.

Leisure & Concern

"Leisure & Concern," an exhibition of new work by lori Larusso, will be opening this coming Final Friday, February 29th @ 1305 Gallery!

Exhibition dates are February 29th- April 19th, including an opening reception with the artist February 29th from 6-11 pm, and a second opening March 28th 6-11 pm. Gallery hours Tuesday through Saturday, 11-3.

1305 is lucky to be able to host the artist and her work for the second time, and now she's much closer to home! After finishing a residency this summer at the Bemis Center in Omaho, Nebraska, Larusso moved to Richmond, Kentucky. Now we expect to see her work at more regional galleries and exhibits which is a real treat!
"Leisure & Concern" as a title for her show belies the two-sided nature of her work. Some pieces seem to soak and saturate the viewer with a sweet, soft, enchanting domestic ecstacy that reminds us of the time of leisure suits and martini lunches. Other pieces speak directly to heavy and relevant undercurrents in our daily "progress" as a society. Suburban sprawl, domestic violence, and social struggles undermine smooth panels of perfectly painted kitchens, neighborhoods, and environments. Often the two sides are so integral to each other that they appear in every piece, latently behind layers of icing and frill.

Backyard @ 1305!

Opening Final Friday January 25th with a reception from 6-11 pm is "Backyard," an exhibition of photographs by Rachel Girard Reisert. All works are pigmented Ultrachrome inkjet prints on Moab Entrada natural white paper in poplar frames.
The exhibition continues through February 23rd, with regular gallery hours Tuesday- Saturday, 11-3, or by appointment.

Throughout the seasons of one year in Tempe, Arizona, Reisert ventured into the backyards of friends and aquaintances bearing witness to those things which resided therein. Rachel's photographs take shape in these backyards, which the artist identifies as "microcosms for the larger world." Mimicking the cycles of life and death that occur and have always occurred in the world, the subjects of her photographs are suspended in some part of that cycle. As is often the case, what appears to be death can actually be the start of new life, or vise versa.

Light and focus are in constant interplay in each piece. The viewer is drawn in like taking a deep breath or viewing something under a microscope, but then suddenly your focus changes and the objects fade and blur. The pieces seem to have their own rhythm in this way, back and forth, in and out, fast then slow, and etc.

In the heart of our frozen city Rachel Girard Reisert has put together an exhibition which can help us acknowledge the essential changes which take place even in the still and cold. What needs to happen between the decay of fall and the rise of spring in order for nature and our own lives as human beings to keep their course? Maybe we need to look a little closer to home for the answers. You might not even have to leave your own backyard...

Michael Stillion's "Man-Made"

Opening Final Friday, October 26th with a reception that evening from 6-11 pm is "Man-Made:" an exhibition of new work by Michael Stillion. The exhibition runs through November 24th, with regular gallery hours Tues- Sat 11-3.

Presenting a recently completed body of work, much of which was made during his graduate studies at Indiana University, Michael Stillion brings a show of evolution and deconstruction to the fall season at 1305.
Within his paintings and paper collages there is an immediate sense that objects hold no fixed place, that they are in a constant state of coming together and falling apart. Huts and space stations break down into boards bricks, panels, and lights. Spaces where one might live in a world devoid even momentarily of gravity and natural laws construct themselves in midair.
There is a balance in the paintings between Stillion's loose, free, and expressive use of the medium and the tighly rendered and controlled objects that struggle to make up some undefineable construct. They are playful and inviting, while encasing an ever present sense of "obsession and nervousness."
In the same way the delicate paper assemblages behind glass seem like tiny fragile specimens or pieces of places or things which you can't quite put your finger on.
Stillion's work transports you to an invented space, something both otherworldly and extremely familiar. Like standing in the middle of a corn field looking up at the stars- you feel pulled between the seemingly mundane and the supernatural.

Stop down Final Friday, October 26th for a chance to meet Michael and see his work before anyone else! With Halloween events and holiday goings-on that evening, it will make a perfect whimsical beginning, addition, or end to your festivities! 1305 starts its fall season off with the perfect end of summer show! Alan Vannoy's work is like the Fourth of July meets Halloween; creative energy meets lyrical whimsy. His process utilizes imagery and objects from everyday life- things he likes to pick up, collect, and assemble. There's a definite aesthetic to these "items" that immediately calls upon the motifs and color schemes of retro Americana. Primarily using printing techniques to render these different elements into often times layered and interwoven works, the pieces are like bits of early twentieth century illustration and Betty Crocker magazines laid on top of each other, peeled off, and then laid back on top again in reverse. As Vannoy himself says, "My work is past-tense propaganda, a call to reconsider things taken for granted so long ago."

I personally enjoy the work as an artist and curator because making work in my mind is so much about collecting things that inspire you on a daily basis and recalculating their relationships to each other in the studio. Making art and living are one in the same, or should be, and when they successfully fuse in the creation of a piece it seems to create something true and unassuming. In this way Alan Vannoy's work is approachable on a very real down to earth way, it draws you in and gets you to take your shoes off and stay a while. Once it's got you there, the work often unfolds to reveal discussions on very humanistic subjects like love, death, violence, and health.

Final Friday was Rockin' & Benchin'

If you didn't make it out for Final Friday you missed a great night on Main Street! Michelle Red Elk was here telling the stories behind her work, Jeremy Cronk played and sang songs to fill the night, and local artisan Jamie Almand's birch ply bench made its debue at 1305 Gallery!
You can stop in any time to see Michelle's work, and Jamie's bench will be here for your sitting and viewing pleasure. Jamie is newly relocated to Cincinnati and can make this beautiful bench to order! Come check it out and see examples of more of his past work in wood, his pieces are amazing!
Hopefully Jeremy Cronk will be back again to play in the gallery, his guitar and vocal musings were the perfect accent to a perfect night at the gallery!
There are still plenty of pieces left from Michelle's series of 60 works entitled " The Four Directions," but they're going fast. At $150 a piece they're a steal and quite a few of you have already added them to your collections.

Four Directions

Opening Final Friday, May 25th with a reception from 6-11 pm is "Four Directions."

Made possible by a grant from the Serpent Source Foundation, this exhibition consists of 60 small works by local artist Michelle Red Elk. Each piece is a framed watercolor and graphite rendering of a story or symbol from Native American mythology and history categorized into one of the four directions, with 15 pieces total for each of the directions. The resulting 60 works fill the gallery with a constantly evolving and disintegrating story, something at once personal and philosophical. It is a narrative that is spoken from the artist's own personal history and from the history of the many cultures that make up the people we know as Native Americans. Michelle does not strive to represent everyone or everything in the least, she has taken stories and symbols that have special meaning to her and articulated them in her own hand, with her own signature and sense.
Individually each piece is softly enrapturing with Red Elk's gentle detailed hand, her characterization of forms and shapes, and her exacting but delicate use of color. The meticulous renderings speak of a love for her subject, while the handling of the medium shows a skill well-honed and used freely.
Together these works are completely captivating, and they surround you with songs and stories that seem to speak to each other and to you. When vistiting her small studio and seeing these works surrounding me on the walls I had the feeling I was being pulled into them, that they were taking me over, slowly but surely covering me in their blanket of stories.

I hope you can come experience her work and see what I mean, I'm sure I've only done the work injustice by trying to put into words the effect it has on the viewer.

The exhibition runs through Sunday, June 24th, with a closing reception that evening from 7-9 pm. Gallery hours are Tues- Sat: 11-3, and Second Sunday June 10th from 12-5 pm.

The Duet @ 1305

"The Duet: 2 Years & 2 Ex-boyfriends Later" opens Final Friday April 27th with a colossal Anniversary Party and Art Opening from 6 pm to 2 am that night! This exhibition features new work by yours truly, Lily Mulberry. The show runs through Sunday May 20th, with a closing reception that evening from 7-9 pm.

The work has been begun, finished, reworked, then refinished over quite some time, a lot of the pieces seeing their first days when I was still in undergrad at DAAP. They have all been completed in the last year, many in the last month. In many ways this body of work is an extended phrasing of the work from last year's anniversary show, "Rivers Within." The same imagery and metaphors have resurfaced, but this time instead of a discourse on blood/water and the tragic events that plagued the globe last year, the imagery begins to delve into my personal struggles, my own blood/water.

Bleeding, heartache, distance and pain gradually transform themselves in the work. Social conformity and the rules that govern love and our lives are broken down and battled. Pain and disappointment at the failed prospects we imagine for ourselves, or are supposed to imagine for ourselves, are transformed into promise, destiny, astrological coincidences, and at last immense fulfillment. This description weighs the work, but in reality it is all just more of the same dreamy mixed media rambling I've been pursuing since the beginning of my career outside of school 4 years ago...

Opening Final Friday, February 23rd with a reception from 6-11 is "Gwendolyn Magee: New Work." The exhibition will run through March 25th, with regular gallery hours Tues- Sat 11-3.

Gwendolyn works in two media to create the pieces featured in the exhibition; acrylic on wood vs. ceramic tiles. Within both media she delivers nostalgia, visual and emotional intensity, color, and a sense of surface very directly and successfully.
The first medium, acrylic on wood, showcases portraits of women from another era in bright colors with high sheen. Their expressions are always intense, strained, excessive, and even ridiculous sometimes. They exist at once as both portraits of real people who live or had once lived, and as icons for a generation, a class, a gender, a race. The approachable uplifting pallettes mislead the viewer- hiding a dark story very near to the surface. See attached image.
The second medium, ceramic tile, is strikingly different in the handling of the medium, but easily related to the first. These hand crafted tiles have delicately painted images and textured patterns and shapes fused into the clay surface, not without the aid of creative glaze work. They tell a broader story than the faces of women in the paintings, referencing classical art, history, playful cartoons of wrestlers, american nostalgia, etc. As a viewer one is very impressed by Gwendolyn's versatility with different media, as well as her skill in each.
As always there's plenty of good food and great art when you come to 1305 for Final Friday!

Also, don't forget to stop back down to see "Associations: Ted Lind & Scott Boberg" before the 18th. This show has done very well, with lots of traffic and too many compliments. Associations @ 1305!

Opening Final Friday January 26th with a reception from 6-11 pm is "Associations: Ted Lind & Scott Boberg." Exhibition runs through February 18th, closing that evening from 7-9 pm. Gallery hours are Tues- Sat from 11-3 during exhibition dates.

These two artists appproached the gallery with an idea to exhibit their work together based on the presumption that the two bodies of work would create a unique and profound dialogue when in the same space. The current created by their work was so interesting that the exhibition seemed to be the perfect season-opener for 2007. "Associations" is an exhibit of work by two Curators of Education, Scott Boberg from the Cincinnati CAC, and Ted Lind from the Cincinnati Art Museum.

Scott Boberg presents a series of illuminated book pages along with completely illuminated books. The delicate and temporal nature of his media carry references to the very origins of record keeping, documentation, illustration, & narration. As Boberg manipulates the printed medium to retell a story at once universal and specific, as a viewer you the get the sense that he hasn't done this for himself, but for the reader/viewer. The books are like monumental epics, insanely detailed and precise, the framed pages like a microscopic piece that anyone could take away with them.

Ted Lind showcases paintings on panel that seem to be informed by almost a hundred years of abstract painting. Knowing his background as a museum curator one can believe that they actually are. Beware not to immediately cast them off as the anachronistic work of a heavily studied disciple, because Lind's paintings are immediately engrossing and beautiful. The colors and forms are so carefully woven into their mysterious lanscapes that one feels immediately the climate, time, and place of each piece.

"Yuletide 2006" features work by 15 local artists who have created gift-ready items for the holiday season. Many artists have been crafting all year to prepare for the show, which will feature ornaments, wearables, candles, glass trinkets, holiday cards, candy, things for the kids, and so much more- all handmade!
"Yuletide 2006" opens Final Friday, November 24th, from 6-11 pm. This festive exhibition will run through Saturday, December 23rd, with hours Tuesday- Saturday from 11-3. The gallery will also feature for this month only extended hours Fridays and Saturdays until 8 pm, along with special hours Sunday December 10th from 12-5 for the second day of the Main Street Holiday Stroll & Shop weekend!
All artists have created free personalized gift wrapping for their wares, so your gifts can be extra special inside and out! There is sure to be something at 1305 to please even the most disciminating friend, family member, or coworker.

Opening Final Friday, October 27th from 6-11 pm is a show of Lightboxes and Photographs by Matthew Shelton. The exhibition will run through Sunday, November 19th, with a closing that evening from 7-9 pm. Gallery hours are Tues- Sat 11-3 pm.

Matthew Shelton creates two very different groups of work, both of which you can find around town at different times in different locations. The first is a series of paintings of "Women & Kitties," soon to show at the Comet in Northside. The second, a series of lightboxes and photographs based on geometric symbolism and altered photographs were featured last year at Semantics in a show titled, "A Happier Hollywood."
For Matthew's show to open this coming Final Friday we'll black out the windows in the gallery, turn off the lights, and plug in the artwork. Everyone is invited to come down, with or without your costume, and become illuminated by the microcosmal worlds Matthew has created for this exhibition. The artist's attention to precision in his craftsmanship mingles with cosmic and dreamy imagery in a way that creates something like a dream in a box- perfectly told, meaningful, but uncertain and intriguing. I have known Matthew for about 8 years and have always thoroughly enjoyed his work and the places it takes me. Come see for yourself Final Friday or anytime from then until November 19th what is so mystifying about Matthew Shelton's "Lightboxes." It's going to be an awesome show!

It's time again for Yuletide! Christmas Crafting Galore!
These are some patchwork patches by Elaine Lynch that were in last year's show. This year is bound to be an even bigger success than last year!
I want to remind everyone that the idea behind Yuletide is that the crafts are made by local Fine Artists specifically for this show, as a way for even the average joe to own a work of art by a local artist. However, the work will range in price and dimension to accomodate everyone on your Christmas list.
Each artist will also be creating individualized gift wrapping for their work!

Tent Rocks

Opening Final Friday, September 29th is "Tent Rocks," an exhibition of quilted works by local artist Briana Smith based on the naturally painted landscape of the Tent Rocks National Monument. The gallery will be hosting the artist and her work, along with great food and refreshments from 6-11 pm on the 29th.

The exhibition runs from September 29th- October 22nd, with a closing reception that evening from 7-9pm. The gallery will be open as usual from 11am - 3pm, Tuesday through Saturday for the length of the exhibition, and will also be open for Second Sundays on Main, October 8th from 12-5.

About the Exhibition:
These quilts are rich and dense with layers of colors and materials. Whether the piece is smaller and mounts as though a painting, or as large, vast, and rich as a quilt, Smith works each one with precision and a very real respect for the craft. The pieces are however nontraditional in the realm of quilts, using the medium to articulate the undulations and layers of this landscape. Through the fabric and thread, the different colors and depths of the landscape flow in and out, over and under. The never ending skys of the American West are serene and mysterious layers of gauze and painted fabric. The prehistoric formations of seemingly painted rocks are personified by intercepting strips and pieces of cloth that continuously interweave. They are brought together by the meticulous work of the thread, unifying them into collossal feats of nature and artistry.

Opening Final Friday, August 25th is "Appearances," watercolors by Carson Wassermann. The show will run through Sunday, September 24th, with a closing reception that evening from 7-9 pm.

Gallery hours beginning August 26th: Tues-Sat 11-3 & September 10th, 12-5 for SSOM

Carson's work is a perfect way to end the summer, while reminding us of why we look forward to this season every year. Her lush use of the watercolor medium brings to life fresh faces enrobed in color and bathed by light. Carson often paints from her travels in South America, Mexico, and elsewhere, allowing the viewer to come into contact with people and places obviously personal to her. Carson works as a bilingual social worker in Cincinnati, and her interest and devotion toward individuals is reflected in the way people are portrayed in her work. The appearances are personal and magnetic. Each piece is so delicately alive through the immediacy of the watercolor, and at the same time bright and refreshing. Come check out these pieces Final Friday, and talk to Carson about their creation! While you're here enjoy homemade snacks and refreshments.

Also, if you participated in or wanted to participate in "Pages: A Public Drawing Experiment" last month but have not returned your entries the deadline has been extended. Due to a lack of entries returned by Second Sunday, August 13th, the new deadline is Second Sunday, September 10th. You can still purchase pages for $1/page starting Final Friday, August 25th. Because the primary objective of this experiment was to print a book as a demographic drawing experiment, it is essential that enough data be collected before that is possible. I apologize to those, and there were a few (you know who you are, and thanks), who brought their finished entries back on time. Know that if we get enough entries copies of the book will be my thanks for your timely participation. There will be no closing or awards reception August 20th.

Come to Final Friday, July 28th and get in on "Pages," a Drawing Experiment Open to the Public. Purchase 1 or more pages from the 5 topics to be investigated for $1/page. Enjoy Soul and Funk spun by Iceburg, and lots of good food and refreshments from 6-11 p.m.
If you can't make it to Final Friday come down to Second Sunday on August 13th from 12-5 to judge the entries in "Pages." All entries are due by 12 noon that day and will be judged by the public.
3 days of "Nutshell" left, so if you haven't checked it out stop by before the end of the closing party this Sunday from 7-9 p.m.

Come visit us this Sunday June 11th for the second 2006 Second Sunday on Main! Artist Katie Swartz will be in the gallery, and they'll be lots happening out on the street. Festivities include live music, food, vendors, and a parade of dogs in costume!

Opening Final Friday May 26th is "soft heart," a show of new work by Katie Swartz. Katie's been soft-heartedly gaining a fan club for a long time in this city, especially recently when she started displaying her crocheted animal companions. They will be making an appearance at the gallery next month along with their ceramic counterparts. These pieces are genuine and whimsical, they invite you into a close and comfy world- the soft heart of the artist. As Katie's friend and former roommate, it is so exciting to have a show of just her work in the gallery, and I hope a lot of people can stop by to see why. If you can't make it to the opening, come to the Closing, Tuesday, June 26th, to meet Katie and see her creations.

Friday night was crazy at the gallery, but for me it was just an extension of the whole week. A lot of work went into getting up the show, "rivers within." I knew it was a bit presumptuous to host a show of all my work on my anniversary, but I thought it was do-able. It was, just barely. I had to clean up the wreckage today from all the food and alcohol, the gallery smelled so awful. Today the week might finally hit me, I feel like I've been rode hard and put away wet for real.
To top it all off my landlord borrowed the mop, so for now the gallery floor is a bit like the floor of a sugar mill.
I hope I get some people in this month, I haven't really been as prolific in my own work since the gallery opened, so it's been a while for some to have seen my pieces. I think the show looks great and am very proud of myself.
Hope I see some people I've missed. Tues-Sat 11-3 I'm here.

Final Friday April 28th marks our One Year Anniversary at 1305 Gallery, so we're going to celebrate with a great opening! This time last year the first ever exhibition at the gallery, "Tide" included work by myself, Lily Mulberry, created specifically for the opening. "rivers within" is a body of work I created to mark the anniversary while reflecting on one year past and what's to come.

Because at 1305 it's important that our audience understands the rudimentary nature of the gallery and it's operation in order to visualize our goals, this exhibition reflects on the interconnectivity of the body, the brain, and the eventual output. One person's capabilities are the result of the innerworkings of the body corresponding with the brain's direction and the physical limitations of the environment. Through this body of work I hope to expose the essential nature of being animal, spiritual, and human that does not always reveal itself in contemporary art and culture. The rivers within are the conduits of blood, spirit, energy, and thought that somehow continue to work together to allow the individual to make an impression on their world, to build and to grow. These can also be destructive forces, mirroring the destructive natural forces that have changed our physical world in the last year.

On Friday there will be food, music, paintings, and conversation. Please come celebrate with me and everyone who has helped bring 1305 to this point. Funk and Soul records spun by Chris Burgan start a little before 10, but the opening starts at 6.

Artist Talk @ 1305

This month Janie Stevens, a professor at the University of Cincinnati, DAAP brought a photography class in to see Matt's work. It was very beneficial both to the class and to myself and the artist. The students found the opportunity to visit a gallery and learn first hand what goes into putting together a show very helpful. The opportunity to discuss his work with such a receptive group allowed Matt to strengthen the ideas and concerns behind his work, while introducing it to a whole new audience. I was glad to have established a contact with the University and hope to work with them in the future to educate students outside of the classroom.
